The Dodgers’ ace Clayton Kershaw took to the mound on Wednesday in the teams’ first warm up game for the season in the Cactus League at Salt River Fields
The number one started off with no runs to the lead as the Dodgers batted in the top of the first and then pitches as you would expect to start with a strike as his first pitch followed up by a fly out to A.J. Pollock. Aaron Hill pounced on a bad pitch by Kershaw to give the D-Backs their first single of the year. Taking advantage of this runner of base, Martin Prado doubled to deep left and made Crawford look silly, as he was standing too shallow. 1-0 D-Backs, end of one.
The Dodgers went down quietly again in the second allowing Arizona to add on another two runs to the tally leading to Clayton being pulled out of the game after 2 innings, giving up 3 ER and 5 hits. 3-0 End of 2.
Yasiel Puig scored the Dodgers first RBI of the year, scoring Carl Crawford from first base on a double off the pitching of McCarthy. The D-Backs starter gave up only the one run in 4 innings pitched and got the win with an ERA of 2.25 with 2 K s.
Los Angeles used a number of 2nd string players such as Figgins at SS, Rojas at SS, Baxter in left, Hazelbaker in right, Harris replacing Papi at 3B, Pederson, Buss sharing the CF role and Robinson at first base and Turner in at DH (yes it is a NL game).
The Dodgers only managed 7 hits in total with the Wild Horse, Puig, grabbing 2, Carl Crawford with one, Hazelbaker with one, SVS 1, Robinson 1 and Turner one.
Javi Guerra, Rosin and Jose Dominguez all pitched 5 scoreless frames combined with Stripling closing with 2 innings and one earned run.
Some main exclusions from today’s opener were Hanley Ramirez, Kemp (injury), Gonzalez, Ethier and AJ Ellis. All these players, except for Kemp, will be playing before the week is out as it is also their Spring Training too.
The end result was the Dodgers going down by 3 runs, 4-1 with a bit to build on but some valuable experienced gained by the youngsters. Pederson has to improve one error otherwise all the fielders would have been perfect, turning 2 double plays.
The Dodgers have the Diamondbacks again tomorrow with Zack Greinke taking the mound. Let’s hope there is a bit more than “zero” excitement for that game.
