Matt Kemp returned in a big way tonight with 2 home runs and 3 RBIs as the Dodgers downed the Giants 6-2 in an emphatic by the LA pitching staff.
Zack Greinke took to the mound for the start and straight away things didn’t look good as he gave Angel Pagan a single on the first pitch of the day. Pagan didn’t get around any more bases however as Greinke sat down the next three batters in a row.
Greinke kept up the performance after the Dodgers went 1-2-3 in the 1st. He retired every one of the batters up until Angel Pagan again hit a single off him but it wasn’t enough as he stayed put at first once again.
However Zack was pitching with a 1-0 lead as Matt Kemp, in his first AB for the game hit a solo homerun over the left field wall and the crowd erupted as Beastmode looked to have come back.
Hanley Ramirez and Kemp were both due up in the fourth with the score still at 1-0 when Hanley homered again over the left field wall and Gonzalez doubled immediately after. Matt Kemp wasted no opportunities with another shot over the centre field wall this time and scored another 2 runs.
Greinke kept up his gem and even got him self a hit in the 5th with a ground rule double in the left field hole.
At this point Zack had more hits than 7 Giants players.
The next inning though Greinke gave up two homeruns after a mound visit from Uribe which looked as though it bought him time.
Belt homered to start the 6th and the next two were retired when Pence homered, both of solo shots. It was now 4-2.
The Dodgers have an off day tomorrow and then on Tuesday play against the Tigers at Dodger stadium with Dan Haren pitching and the Wednesday pitcher hasn’t been announced yet but isn’t going to be Hyun Jin Ryu as he is in need of another 2 days rest and will pitch game one of the Arizona series.
Josh Beckett looks the most likely for the Wednesday game but it is yet to be announced.
The first run of the day not on a homerun came in the bottom of the 6th with Andre Ethier sacrificed flied to right field to score Hanley who had got on with a double and moved to third on a Gonzalez grounder.
There was a lot of talk about Yasiel Puig who sat today with an injured thumb that he received on a slide into first base yesterday and has had an MRI that came back negative with strained ligaments. He may play on Tuesday but no word has been said on his condition.
The next 3 innings would be shared with 4 Dodgers relievers as Withrow came in and struck out the side on 10 pitches.
Greinke’s line was 6IP, 2H, 2ER, 0BB and 8K’s. He also earned him self a win and is now 2-0 for the season.
The first two outs of the 8th were JP Howell’s and he struck out one and gave up a single before Chris Perez came in and struck out the last batter for the 8th.
The Dodgers scored again in the bottom of the inning when Hanley Ramirez joined in on the multi home run club when he solo shot the ball down to the centre field wall.
Kenley Jansen came in and finished it off in a no save situation with 3 strikeouts to his name and a single.
LA’s relievers had got 9 outs, 8 of them through strikeouts.
Clayton Kershaw also said he doesn’t know when he is coming back and he is just throwing and waiting for it to get better.
The Dodgers now move to 5-3 and are half a game back of San Francisco who sit top with a 5-2 record.
